Labor Day is a worldwide festival to celebrate the workers and to appreciate that everything we use from buildings to cellphones was built not by the geniuses of the money market or the intellectuals in their ivory towers, but the workers. Normal people who are not celebrated or appreciated, often forgotten completely, here is a great Labor Day party idea to pay tribute to them.
It is now 20 years since the Berlin Wall fell and except for a handful of extreme and small countries, communism is no longer a spectre over Europe or a danger to the American people. This means that it is not so offensive to appropriate their soviet style of dress and imagery for a labor day theme party to remember.
Whether ironically or with conviction based on the belief in a genuine dictatorship of the proletariat in the future, dressing in the work clothes and berets of Polish dissidents and linking arms to sing workers anthems such as The Internationale and The Soviet anthem can be a bonding and exhilarating experience and can really make your labor day a one to remember.
The tradition of labor day from Europe is for workers to march through their nations capital as a manifestation of the power that they hold, to remind politicians and other leaders that their roles at the top of society still depend on those beneath them who as a mass can overthrow them by sheer weight of numbers. This tradition quickly spread around the world and is observed globally. Those with long memories will remember the spectacular military displays of the former Soviet bloc as a military manifestation of worker power.
To honor and recreate this tradition in suburban America perhaps a mini demonstration in your town would be a good way to bring the community together. The aim of labor day is not only confrontational, much more than showing bosses that the workers are many and united, it is for the benefit of the workers to feel many and unified and be reminded that their toil is appreciated and important.
Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains as the famous German philosopher declared in the opening of his masterpiece. It must be remembered however that labor day does not need to be overtly political and should be seen as a celebration of workers rather than a condemnation of capitalist hypocrisy and oppression. With this great Labor Day party idea this need not be the case
